
Belgium has seen its first fatality of patients suffering from the virus monkeypox. This is the third death in Europe as per an update on the disease by the Sciensano public health institute.
Europe as well as America and the Europe United States are the hotspots of a global epidemic of the disease that has resulted in 50,496 cases and 16 deaths as per the World Health Organisation.
The WHO raised the highest level of alarm on the 24th of July, defining monkeypox as a health emergency of international importance as well as Covid-19.
In Belgium, like elsewhere there are cases that have been mainly seen in men who have had sexual relations with males. In August, at the time of writing the nation of 11.5 million inhabitants had reported 706 cases, 32 of which required hospitalization.
The first death in Belgium was a monkeypox victim suffering from “underlying medical conditions”, the Sciensano report stated.
The disease can cause painful and scarring lesions, mostly to the facial, anus, and genitals.
